BOISE (April 4, 2024) – Boise River Flood Control District #10 has completed its winter maintenance work along the Boise River for the Winter of 2023-24.

Flood District #10 removes trees, as well as snags and debris from portions of the river during the winter months to remove restrictions that could cause flooding during high water in the spring runoff. Trees removed had fallen into the river channel or were at risk of falling into the river channel, officials said. The District works to keep the base of trees and root wads in place for bank stability and fish habitat. This maintenance work also is done to reduce damage to private and public property in the Boise River corridor.

“It was definitely a busy year with more downed trees in the river than usual,” said Flood #10 District Manager Mark Zirschky. “I think it must have been a combination of old rotting trees and some microbursts in various areas, so we spent quite a bit of time cleaning that up.”

Flood #10 postponed some debris-burning projects this year to ensure they were able to conduct maintenance activities throughout the district on the Boise River channel. The District also partnered with Idaho Materials Construction to complete a significant bank-repair project on the North Channel at Eagle Island, just before federal authorities began flood-control releases this spring.

Flood #10 also is applying for a flood management grant from the Idaho Water Resource Board to address several gravel and bank-repair projects.

“I would like to extend my appreciation to Bill Clayton, long-time Chairman of the Flood #10 Board of Directors, for receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Treasure Valley Water Users Association,” Zirschky said.

Clayton received recognition for 40-plus years of service to the flood district, the irrigation community and Boise River recreationists.

Flood #10 winter maintenance work is performed under permits issued by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Idaho Department of Water Resources, local floodplain administrators, and a Memorandum of Understanding from the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ).
